Editorial Commissions

For details on the editor’s expertise and services offered, please see the Services page.

Files and Formats

All editing is done in Word with Track Changes enabled. Unless otherwise requested, a Word document will be returned with all changes and comments displayed for authorial review.

When submitting your document for editing, any Word-compatible file is acceptable (e.g. .doc, .docx, .rtf).

Authors who compose in LaTeX may either provide the source for direct editing (LaTeX markup will not be altered, only the prose), or provide exported text.

If only a PDF file is sent, a 25% surcharge will be applied for conversion of the content into editable form.

Turnaround

Turnaround time varies depending on how much is in queue at the time of submission.  For rough planning purposes, you can expect to allow 1 calendar day for every 2,000 words; however, that is not a binding rule. Only the turnaround time given in a quote is binding, and that may be longer or shorter depending on immediate circumstances.

N.B.: Turnaround is counted from time of payment, and ‘a day’ ends at 8 pm Pacific time. If you have an external deadline that needs be met, state that up front.

Sample edits can be expected back within 2 days.

“Rush” projects will not be accepted unless agreed to in advance. In other words, before submitting a rush document, send a heads-up of your intention to get confirmation that it can be accommodated. Express delivery incurs a 25% surcharge.

Pricing

Sample edits are free. For a sample project, the amount of text edited will be at editor’s discretion, being only as much as is needed to illustrate editorial style. This is usually no more than 500-1,000 words.

Samples aside, the standard editing rate is $40 per 1,000 words ($0.04 per word). This flat rate means that document formatting (e.g. single vs. double spacing, length of tables) does not impact price.

When appropriate, additional fees may be applied for:

  • converting PDF content (25% surcharge)
  • rush delivery (25% surcharge)

Revisions

Follow-up editing of revised text is free unless the revision adds a substantial amount of new content, in which case that added text counts as a project all its own.

Requests for revision that are considered ‘excessive’ may be denied at editor’s discretion.

Submission

Questions and project requests will typically be replied to within 24 hours. If a project is accepted, a quote will be sent stating turnaround time and payment instructions. Because the queue is ever-changing, quotes are valid for 7 calendar days.
